Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg is position\u00ading itself as Germany\u2019s leading location for quantum commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion technolo\u00adgies. On January 22, 2025, the Karlsruhe Insti\u00adtute of Technol\u00adogy (KIT) inaugu\u00adrated a 20-kilometer-long fiber optic test line that connects specially equipped labora\u00adto\u00adries on the South and North campuses. The track will enable researchers to develop and test quantum key distri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion technolo\u00adgies based on physi\u00adcal laws to ensure eavesdropping-proof commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion. At the same time, the Univer\u00adsity of Ulm, in cooper\u00ada\u00adtion with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), put a 2.5\u2011kilometer quantum key distri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion link into opera\u00adtion on Febru\u00adary 27, 2025. This link, the first between a univer\u00adsity and a non-university insti\u00adtu\u00adtion in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, enables the secure trans\u00admis\u00adsion of infor\u00adma\u00adtion using quantum keys. The project benefits from DLR\u2019s exper\u00adtise in optical commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions and quantum comput\u00ading and repre\u00adsents a signif\u00adi\u00adcant step towards the practi\u00adcal appli\u00adca\u00adtion of quantum-based encryp\u00adtion techniques.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/module_freetext_image][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][module_free_text spacebefore=\u201cspacebefore-none\u201d spaceafter=\u201cspaceafter\u2011m\u201d indentbefore=\u201cindentbefore-xs\u201d indentafter=\u201cindentafter-xs\u201d bgcolor=\u201d\u201d moduleeffect=\u201ceffect-media\u201d]\n

The planned connec\u00adtion of the test tracks via the Univer\u00adsity of Stuttgart will create a statewide network that will drive the quantum revolu\u00adtion in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. This strate\u00adgic devel\u00adop\u00adment strength\u00adens the region as a leading location for quantum research and appli\u00adca\u00adtions and helps to increase security in areas such as medicine, finance and politics.<\/span><\/p>\n
