Together with project partners from the Karlsruhe Insti\u00adtute of Technol\u00adogy (KIT) and the Univer\u00adsity of Stuttgart, Ulm Univer\u00adsity has made it to the next round of the Excel\u00adlence Strat\u00adegy of the German federal and state govern\u00adments. These include the \u201cChem4Quant\u201d draft proposal from KIT (the univer\u00adsity manag\u00ading the funds), Ulm Univer\u00adsity and the Univer\u00adsity of Stuttgart. In this joint project, an inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary team from the areas of chemistry, physics, computer science and materi\u00adals science is seeking to develop atomi\u00adcally precise mater\u00adial struc\u00adtures to be used in future quantum technolo\u00adgies. Using a chemi\u00adcal platform, qubit materi\u00adals are to be planned and designed in such a way that they will be ideally suited to the specific require\u00adments of quantum technol\u00adogy. The high-precision quantum archi\u00adtec\u00adtures are intended for use in such areas as the future quantum internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-size-s\">\u201cWe are thrilled that our draft proposal was success\u00adful and that we can now submit a full proposal for a Cluster of Excel\u00adlence\u201d, says Profes\u00adsor Fedor Jelezko. The IQST is an inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary group of researchers from the natural sciences and engineer\u00ading that is unique in Germany. It is jointly run by Ulm Univer\u00adsity, the Univer\u00adsity of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Insti\u00adtute for Solid State Research.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-size-s\">Their shared goal is to develop innov\u00ada\u00adtive technolo\u00adgies based on the princi\u00adples of quantum physics. Despite the break\u00adthroughs achieved in the field of quantum technol\u00adogy so far, many of the platforms currently in use remain limited in terms of scala\u00adbil\u00adity, adjusta\u00adbil\u00adity, position\u00adabil\u00adity and error correc\u00adtion. Chem4Quant is thus propos\u00ading a funda\u00admen\u00adtally new approach, with a chemistry-based platform. Quantum archi\u00adtec\u00adtures that can be precisely defined in a chemi\u00adcal sense make it possi\u00adble to delib\u00ader\u00adately plan atomi\u00adcally precise mater\u00adial struc\u00adtures and their quantum proper\u00adties. For example, qubits can be positioned in electri\u00adcal or photonic compo\u00adnents with a preci\u00adsion that lies below the nanome\u00adtre&nbsp;range.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-size-s\">The initia\u00adtive aims to create new qubit materi\u00adals and develop the first compo\u00adnents for the future quantum inter\u00adnet. In this context, Chem4Quant can draw on globally unique exper\u00adtise in the field of molec\u00adu\u00adlar quantum systems as well as estab\u00adlished partnerships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-size-s\">The Clusters of Excel\u00adlence funding line is part of the Excel\u00adlence Strat\u00adegy of the German federal and state govern\u00adments. The funding programme is admin\u00adis\u00adtered by the German Research Founda\u00adtion (Deutsche Forschungs\u00adge\u00admein\u00adschaft, DFG). Approved Clusters of Excel\u00adlence receive 3 to 10 million euros per year and the maximum duration of funding is two periods of seven years&nbsp;each.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-size-s\">The appli\u00adca\u00adtion process has multi\u00adple phases. The panel of experts has now selected 41 out of a total of 143 draft propos\u00adals for full propos\u00adals (EXC propos\u00adals). The final funding decision on the future Clusters of Excel\u00adlence will be taken in late
